CORA(i)L – Revisiting coral health monitoring : from AI-based image recognition to next-generation reef monitoring (PIs: Eric RÖTTINGER, Eric GILSON: 2024 -2026). Coral health, like human health, is complex and multifactorial, making it difficult, if not impossible, to describe based on a single variable. Currently, a reference diagnosis on coral health is still lacking. To this end, we developed artificial intelligence (AI) machines to detect health-related hallmarks from coral colony. In this context, the objective of CORA(i)L is threefold; validate these machines to assess coral reef health state, to use the machine to better understand the impact of global changes on coral reef health facing the global changes and study the feasibility to implement citizen science actions using these machines for next generation coral reef surveys.
