How does an organism manage to rebuild itself after a major injury? In regenerative biology, a central question is understanding the link between the formation of an organism during embryonic development and its ability to regenerate in adulthood. In a study published in Nature Communications, scientists explored this question in sea anemones. Their results show that regeneration relies on partial reuse of the embryonic genetic program, reorganized and connected to genes specifically mobilized to repair and rebuild the body.
